What Happened

this post made a lot more sense in my mind when i was composing it on the bus back home.

what happened? that's what everyone wants to know. everyone wants to make sense of all the loss. all the waste. when i read a tweet about it, i couldn't believe it. it had to be a different sedilla. it was too hard to believe. soon, i checked facebook and confirmed the fact that yes, it was patricia sedilla's family who was burned in the fire with their two helpers. i cannot comprehend this tragedy because it all happened too suddenly. she was too young, too promising, and had a future too bright for this to happen. so many what could have been's are with us now because she has left us too early. only the good die young they say, but what does it really mean and why does it happen?

i wouldn't say me and pat are close. but we have crossed paths our whole lives. she was my classmate from 1st to 3rd grade and 5th and 6th grade. her dad is my lola and dad's cardiologist. her mom and my mom would talk to each other at school functions. her sister i never really knew. patsed was a friend i kept all the way through high school and even until college. i would never hesitate to talk to her for fear she changed or her attitude towards me changed. she was always so nice and approachable that i never felt like i lost her as a friend. even in college, i would never hesitate to wave and greet her (unless she's with a group of friends) because it's genuinely nice to see a familiar face in a sea of strangers.

the last time i saw her, i think i was with my geog group mates. i looked up, saw her, smiled, waved, and said hello. i regret not asking her how she was or how she was holding up. then again, no one could have predicted what would happen.

i will miss seeing patsed's friendly face and ready smile around school. i was counting on it for the next three years at least. i will pray for her and her family tonight. may they rest in peace for i am sure they are with God in heaven now.
